This was my FAVORITE book when I was a little kid I couldn't get enough of all the dinosaur pictures and the swampy areas they supposedly lived in

If you are or have ever been a five year old boy in Waldorf Maryland then I have no need to describe the significant role this fine work of literature played in your emotional and psychological development The graphic picture of the Allosaurus sinking his teeth into the neck of the Brontosaurus in the midst of the tepid Jurassic swamp evokes a pathos reminiscent of The Tempest Gretchen and I read the fine work aloud to one another on chilly evenings and warm ones as well

I loved this book as a kid This is the book that made me think Allosaurus was so much cooler than T Rex

This book was written several decades ago so it is not not the fault of the writer that it is out of date The last dinosaurs became extinct because of a meteor strike not for the reasons given here There is evidence unintentionally given in the book that some dinosaurs evolved into birds but this was not a hypothesis at the time and so the author could not have noted it That's fine This is a book to inform children of 1960 about dinosaurs How well does it do that?As a child who read this book at about that time I wish I could say that it informed me very well It did not but I did not know any better Being something of a bloodthirsty savage I gloried in the depictions of some dinosaurs battling for their lives against dinosaur carnivorous especially the painting on pp 28 9 with an Allosaurs drawing blood from a Brontosaurus What I did not know and the author may have reading between the line of what IS there is the rest of a dinosaur's life apart from feeding There is no express reference made to the fact that some species lived in packs that some reared their young nothing about dinosaur excrement people study this and while there is some mention of habitat this is not applied evenly to all the species discussed Though my under 10 self did not know it this would be a better book if it discussed these and other thingsI had nostalgic fun reading this book again It is best left to those with nostalgia for it
