Barely 3 starsThat was odd You know me, I m a total fan of Master slave or captor captive or even rescuer rescued stories but this one didn t convince me I d categorise it as an epistolary novel as Arcana, the rescued Arlai slave, had been brutally robbed of his voice and communicated his horrific story in the form of reports written to the starship captain, Mordecai. The love story so to speak was very weird, I didn t feel any chemistry between the MCs And Mordecai s thoughts fe Barely 3 starsThat was odd You know me, I m a total fan of Master slave or captor captive or even rescuer rescued stories but this one didn t convince me I d categorise it as an epistolary novel as Arcana, the rescued Arlai slave, had been brutally robbed of his voice and communicated his horrific story in the form of reports written to the starship captain, Mordecai. The love story so to speak was very weird, I didn t feel any chemistry between the MCs And Mordecai s thoughts feelings whilst reading those letters were rather disturbing for me.The end felt rushed We see one real scene between the MCs, and I meanrealbecause it was one of the only few where Arcana and Mordecai actually met and did something togetherAnd then BOOM and we suddenly have the epilogue There were almost no secondary characters, no plot, no world building considering the inside of the ship or the book s universe only some details about Arla, the alien planet, in Arcana s reports The whole story felt to me a bitdetachedfrom, well, everything actually. The writing style saved my writing I can t honestly tell you that it wasn t compelling and lyrical It was well written in terms of language and the quite peculiar lexis that was used, especially in Arcana s letters.I have to think about picking upbooks by this new to me Author

It seems like, lately I read some of books out of my comfort zone There was a giddy feeling before I read this book.Knowing that there s some rape, kidnapping, slavery, and all the dark side of the story, not to mention sci fi and fantasy. Not my preferences at all.Captain Mordecai wanted Arcana from day one he safe Arcana But Arcana s heart and soul still bound to Blaek, his captor for seven years since he s kidnapped at seventeen. He suffered every torture but yet, he couldn t help himself to It seems like, lately I read some of books out of my comfort zone There was a giddy feeling before I read this book.Knowing that there s some rape, kidnapping, slavery, and all the dark side of the story, not to mention sci fi and fantasy. Not my preferences at all.Captain Mordecai wanted Arcana from day one he safe Arcana But Arcana s heart and soul still bound to Blaek, his captor for seven years since he s kidnapped at seventeen. He suffered every torture but yet, he couldn t help himself to depend and loving the monster who took him inHe groaned and drank of me for a long while that way Everything I offered. Then he bound my hands above my head and whipped me.How I hated him.How I loved him But then he met Captain Mordecai, and slowly wanted him, though he admitted to Modecai, he s still love and belonged to Blaek. It s a mind game I didn t love and impressed of the story, but I cannot hate this.Written in what I called a silent conversation, this story placed on Mordecai ship where all the rescued slave given their therapy.Arcana and Mordecai had their relationship through their conversation with the tablet Arcana still didn t have his voice back at that time.Near the ending, Mordecai finally told Arcana that he wanted him, as much as Arcana wanted Mordecai. They have their happy ending, with Arcana s voice back, and finally leave his past behind and start a true living with Mordecai. If you like this kind of book you ll probably like this one

Slavery is a very touchy subject and it s difficult to write about I m anxious to pick up books on that theme when they are in the Romance genre, because they sometimes misrepresent it in order to tell a love story between a master and a slave, or, like in this case, between a person and an ex slave However, while there were a few things in Prey that made me a bit uncomfortable, my overall impression was that the relationship between the master owner and Arcana wasn t too romanticised.Yes, Arc Slavery is a very touchy subject and it s difficult to write about I m anxious to pick up books on that theme when they are in the Romance genre, because they sometimes misrepresent it in order to tell a love story between a master and a slave, or, like in this case, between a person and an ex slave However, while there were a few things in Prey that made me a bit uncomfortable, my overall impression was that the relationship between the master owner and Arcana wasn t too romanticised.Yes, Arcana admits to having feelings for the alien who bought him after Arcana was abducted, but he realizes that those feelings were programmed in him through the training and punishments that the humans went through after they were taken He also says that he got lucky with his owner and that the other humans might not have had anything close to his experience. He seems aware of how much he s changed, what he has turned into and how he could use that to his advantage That adaptability is something that impressed me.As for his relationship with Mordecai Paronne the human Captain of the starship Prince Fair, well Mordecai likes to be in control He runs his ship efficiently and they are the first to successfully rescue enslaved humans from the Arlai aliens Yet, you can see him unravel and get in a way addicted to Arcana, and you while you read, you can t help but wonder if Arcana not only realizes his effect on his savior, but actually turns the tables on the Captain and is the one who is truly in control.Mordecai asks Arcana to write him reports on what he s been through and the ex slave does so in the form of very detailed, very explicit letters to the Captain I found them quite engaging because they not only showed the psychological changes in Arcana, but also introduced us to the alien race However, I must caution you that these letters might trigger some of you as they talk about abduction, slavery, abuse and violation.I d recommend Prey to those who don t want a cutesy romance and are not easily putt of by abuse and slavery

First, this is a very different read from other romances And second, the author handles the contentious subject matter with the utmost respect and care This is the second book I ve read by her, and I real enjoy her work.Arcana is abducted by the Arlai, a race of beings who devour people and use them for their own sexual pleasure The other hero, Mordecai, is almost abducted by the Arlai as a teenager but escapes the fate that awaits Arcana years later.Mordecai, now captain of the ship that r First, this is a very different read from other romances And second, the author handles the contentious subject matter with the utmost respect and care This is the second book I ve read by her, and I real enjoy her work.Arcana is abducted by the Arlai, a race of beings who devour people and use them for their own sexual pleasure The other hero, Mordecai, is almost abducted by the Arlai as a teenager but escapes the fate that awaits Arcana years later.Mordecai, now captain of the ship that rescues Arcana, is drawn to Arcana s spirit and beauty upon seeing him for the first time While Arcana, after being a slave for so long, is drawn to Mordecai s power Not the power of being a captain for a spaceship, but the inner strength Mordecai possesses.Just like her other book The Slave Palace you can read my review here , Ms Rathbone s story parallels BDSM Arcana is the sub and Mordecai is the dom And Mordecai is not only drawn to Arcana when he s first rescued, but is sucked deeper into Arcana s web through letters Arcana sends to Mordecai, heavily detailing his abduction, captivity, and even his seduction by the Arlai. The letters are a different twist on most books I ve read The world building in them is spot on I could visualise Arlai The author also expresses a great amount of emotion through Arcana in the letters These letters disturb Mordecai and also arouse him.Readhere
